This camp was organized by a couple of Peace Corps Volunteers, all funded through crowdfunding websites. I took two girls from grades 8-11 with me from my town and other volunteers brought girls from theirs. In Ethiopia the grade a student is in doesn't necessarily correlate with age of the person. Some girls who are 15/16 can still be in primary school (1-5 grades). Education for girl especially in small villages is often not a priority.
The whole camp was held in amharic, ya we had translators because we are just not at that level of amharic yet. We held sessions on Culture and Gender, Goal Setting, Nutrition HIV, RUMPS (Reusable Menstrual Pads), brought in different women leaders from the community. Did Yoga and Zumba in the mornings, played soccer and much more! By the end of the week the girls were so close and we could all feel their growth and energy.
Next year my friends and I hope to lead the camp. We will need your help! I'll leave you with some pics from our camp.
I can go on forever with these pictures but I gots to go.
Much Love, B
